I always enjoy visiting the Tate website or viewing their videos on youtube. The Brits seem to "accept" contemporary art a lot more than Americans, I think they see it as a sort of pop culture.
For example the Tate does an excellent job in promoting contemporary art to the youngsters, with videos like these, the Art Sparks.

I was surprised to see them cover Sophie Calle, and the work they covered was also a bit controversial, interesting though. I remember reading about this work in a book but it took this video for me to really understand it haha, they put it so simply that's why.
I was happily surprised to see Francis Bacon covered too and it gives a great message as well.
I highly recommend these videos, even though they're geared for children they're actualy pretty insightful and thought provoking. Complexity isn't always needed, sometimes simplicity is what speaks the clearest.
Also congratulations to Greg for winning the Go tournament! Make Hawaii/USA proud in Japan!

My first ever figure drawing dump.

Going in order. Contour drawings are so hard to be expressive! I don't like using the "real" pencils all that much but my mechanical tears up the newsprint.

Manga Bento's first art show "Okonomi". More pictures on the flickr.
A lot of people strolled through the space and enjoyed the art, mostly because there was a student art show downstairs and the signs drew them upstairs. I'm glad a lot of kids came, they pretty much completely covered five sheets of large paper with little (sometimes big) doodles. They seemed to have had a lot of fun.

Amazing speech, brb watching history being made.
There's a party across the street down at Obama's Apartment building, it's so funny all the local people partying it up.

They're Printed!
Nov. 1st, 2008 | 08:20 pm
After a few weeks I finally was able to try printing out some of Robo's flyers for the Manga Bento Show.

I didn't print that many, about fifty full size, and twenty or so half size. They're mostly pink, a few are light green and yellow. I don't know when the next meeting is, but I'll try to bring some flyers. If you guys want.
On another note I found out about a project down at the Tate Modern in Britian where they invited contemporary local musicians and composers to produce music inspired by a piece from their collection. Tate then set up "stations" around the works of art where people could listen to the music while observing the pieces. Luckily for us they've also put the experience up on their website

The neatest thing is zooming in on these pieces (via the white boxes), you can see the texture of the canvas! It's crazy.
I recommend Cy Twomby (above) and the Seagram murals by Mark Rothko (below). The music's very relaxing.
I hope everyone had a fun Halloween!

Oh my god I love you google.

Oh god that's such a strange picture. Bull + leotard + OMGFABULOUS RIBBONDANCE.
Comeon ladies! Work those thighs! ~~~
The news is so completely obsessed with Barack Obama doing ANYTHING here. Like "OMG HE JUST THREW AWAY HIS TRASH WHEN HE WENT TO THE BEACH TODAY". I wonder if he got that Zip-Pack like he said he wanted to get.

Ugggg... I wish I had it in me to do some worthwhile illustrations for DISfunkshion. My editor asked me to do three pieces for the issue they're working on and the two I've done and submitted are just, blah. I just wish I had, I don't know put more effort into them. I was thinking, maybe it's because I draw to many things everyday and it's like seperating my energy into several parts instead of one big... presentable part. I don't even know if that's true for me or not, what do you guys think? Do you guys feel a lot more, "art-blocky" when you've been constantly working on stuff?
My mom said that this kind of stuff isn't something you can simply turn on and off, if it were that easy it'd be boring. :) OKAY, I just need to try and concentrate all my energy into this last illustration!
